Catanauan, Quezon

A friend of mine introduced me to this place. While I was conducting my class in FEU,  I learned that one of my best Tourism students, Denmark Catan, is a resident of Catanauan. And that was the start of the plan to go to Catanauan, Quezon.

How to get there

From Manila or Cubao, board the bus going to Lucena. There are so many bus companies plying the route such as Jacliner, DLTB, Jam and Lucena Lines. Travel time is 2.5 - 3 hours. Fare is around P180.

Alight at the Lucena Grand Terminal. Board either the van directly going to Catanauan or the bus going to San Andres. Using the van is faster than the public bus. Fare in the van is P180 and travel time is 3 hours.

Alight in the town of Catanauan. There are so many lodging houses in Catanauan. But I stayed in Alfredo's Resort (P400 - non aircon / P800 - aircon).

After nearly 3 hours of traveling in the van, I reached the town of Catanauan.

Arriving in Catanauan, I was fetched by Denmark and he toured me around the town using a scooter.

Our first destination was the Immaculate Conception Church.

This is the town's church and the interior of the church was simply majestic.

Our second stop was the pier and we had to go to the other side using a boat.

This is the best spot for your sunset viewing.

Sunset was unfolding and we tried our best to capture the moment.

Fare in the boat is P1.00 per passenger and the ride was good only for less than 4 minutes.

And luckily for us, we reached the other side for our sunset viewing.

And we boarded the boat, went back to the other side and Denmark was kind enough to bring me back to the hotel.

Day 2

I woke 4 am in order to catch the sunrise. Again, Denmark was kind enough to tour me in Catanauan. With Denmark's childhood friend, the three of us went to an early escapade in Catanauan.

It was a bit long drive using the scooter. The road was a bit rough but the travel was smooth.

Our first stop that day was Catanauan Cove. Day tour is P700. Unfortunately, it was Holy Friday and the resort was loaded with guests. And so despite my persistent and unwavering pleas to allow me to enter the premises for at least 10-15 minutes to take pictures and blog the resort, it fell short. I even told the staff that I was very much willing to pay the day tour fee for a stay only of 10 minutes. My request fell short and it resulted in a futile effort. Definitely not my loss I told myself. I've been in so many world-class resorts such as The Farm, Hacienda Escudero, and in various resorts in Cebu, Palawan and Davao and these resorts were very accommodating and hospitable to bloggers.

We went back before going back to the resort and again, futile effort.

          Second stop was Punta Tierra.

Sunrise was just unfolding and the sight of the sea was relaxing.

It was low tide and early that morning we saw the fishermen busy with their routinary task.

Punta Tierra is one of the resorts in Catanauan.

We did not bother to enter the resort. The experience in Catanauan Cove was still fresh and we do not want to experience it anew.

     Third stop was Pong-as, Gatasan.

Entrance fee is only P20/pax and cottage  fee is only P200.

I've not seen Catanauan Cove but the site was the best place in Catanauan so far.

We hiked a bit and went to the hill.

At the top of the ridge, you will be entertained by the view.

This is the best spot to unwind and take a relaxing moment with nature.

That afternoon I left Catanauan and went back in Tanauan City, Batangas.

Leaving Catanauan, Quezon but definitely going back!

San Andres, Quezon
HOW TO GET THERE

From Manila or Cubao, board a bus going to Lucena. Alight at the Lucena Grand Terminal and board the mini-bus going to San Andres. Travel time is 5-6 hours from Lucena or 2 hours from Catanauan. There are two bus companies plying the route and they are
John Tom Transit and R & R transit. Fare is P275. First trip is 6am and last trip is 5 pm.

Once there, go to Alibahaban and Sombrero Island.

Enjoy Quezon!!

Socorro, Oriental Mindoro

This is the hometown of my sister-in-law Aleli S. Villegas and for more than 10 years, I have always been invited to visit Socorro.

How to get there

From Manila or Cubao, board a bus going to Batangas City Pier. There are numerous bus companies plying the route such as Jam Liner, DLTB and Batangas Starex (BSC). It is better to board the bus with the signage "ACTEX" or Calabarzon going to Batangas City Pier. Fare is around P165. Travel time from Manila is 2 - 2.5 hours.

Once you reach the pier, go to Terminal 3 and choose between Super Cat, Fast Cat and Ocean Jet. The fare varies from aircon to non-aircon (P190-300). First trip going to Calapan is 6 am and last trip is 6    pm.

Once you reach the Calapan port, board the van going to Socorro/Pinamalayan or the bus going to San Jose. Fare is P100 and travel time is 1.5 hours or 60 kilometers.

Alight in the town of Socorro. But my destination is in Fortuna or Putol and I had to board a motorcycle ride to Putol. Travel time to Putol is 20-30 minutes or 12 kilometers of uphill climb. Fare is P50/pax.

Instead of the van, I boarded the RoRo bus going to San Jose and the fare was only P80.

And after 1.5 hours, I reached Socorro.

I went to the town's market and there I was fetched by Tatay Arse and Nanay Viring and with them is Tatay Edon. We boarded Tatay Arse's van and proceeded to Putol.

Reaching the house, my first instict was to visit the river and the hanging bridge. It was hot that day and I took a dip in the cold water.

But before taking a dip. I climbed the hanging bridge.

Afterwards, I enjoyed the cold and refreshing fresh water of the river.

I waited for the sunset and watched it unfold under the hanging bridge. Tatay Arse fetched me from the river and we took our sumptuous dinner.

Day 2

We went to Bulalacao the following day. (separate blog) and then went back to Socorro.

Arriving in Socorro, I took a nap and then we caught fish in the palaisdaan of Tatay Arse.

We divided the loot and I was able to get 5 big tilapya. I was about to grill the fish but I decided to go back to the river.

Again, I dipped in the cold waters for about an hour and then went back to Tatay Arse's house which was a 10-minute walk.

And along the way back, I saw that they have a horse and I took a souvenir shot onboard the horse.

The following morning I went to Isla Verde leaving treasured memories of Socorro. Thank you Tatay Arse, Nanay Viring and Tatay Edon for your kindness and hospitality in Fortuna, Socorro, Oriental Mindoro.

Adventures in Isla Verde

It took four years before this tour happened. I've always been planning this tour every year and every year it fails. I am from Tanauan City, Batangas and the destination was Batangas City. And after years of craving, planning and aspiring, it just happened. The trip to Isla Verde!

How to get there

From Manila or Cubao, take the bus en route to Batangas City Pier. There are several buses plying the route such as Jam Liner, DLTB, and Batangas Starex. Fare is around P165 from Manila. Travel time is more or less 2-3 hours.

Alight in Batangas Grand Terminal and take the jeep going to SM City. In SM City, take the jeep going to Tabangao. Fare to Tabangao is P15.00. Travel time is 20-25 minutes from SM. Alight at the aplaya and board the boat going to Isla Verde. Fare in the boat is P100. All the 5 boats will leave in between 9-10 am. The moment all the cargoes are loaded. The boats will depart.

There are 5 boat destinations.
San Agustin Silangan
San Agustin Kanluran
San Antonio
San Andres Kuweba
San Agapito

The five boats are:
1. St Paul - going to San Antonio and San Agustin Kanluran (best boat)
2. Sea Queen - going to Kuweba
3. Acqua Taxi - going to San Antonio
4. Via Italy - going to San Agapito
5. Raising Sun - going to Silangan

Best destinations are Mahabang Buhangin and Kuweba.

From Isla Verde back to Batangas City, the boat will leave the next day at 5 am.

I arrived at the aplaya at around 8 am. I waited for the boat to depart.

Chartering/Renting the small boat is P1,500 and the bigger boat is P3,000.

Small boat c/o Sherwin Acebeda (0999) 688 0563 / (0975) 737 4243 He can also give you a bigger boat.

Another person for boat hiring is Mang George 0918 548 6286.

I decided to board St. Paul and hire the boat back to Batangas City.

Along the way, the sea was a bit rough! And it suddenly happened! Acqua Taxi lost its control and almost hit St. Paul. Good thing we were only partially hit and we survived the mild collision! Now I know the feeling of sea tragedy!!!

Everybody was jolted and shocked by the fortuitous event! We remained calm and continued with the voyage.

After 1 hour and 30 minutes, we reached Silangan. But we, Sherwin (the boat operator that I hired) and I alighted at the next stop.

After a couples of minutes, we arrived at Mahabang Buhangin

The sight of Mahabang Buhangin was breathtaking! This is Isla Verde!

We alighted and walked towards the house of Sherwin.

The scenery while walking was relaxing.

I told myself after seeing the road that its going to be a long walk.

And we started walking towards our destination. We passed a chapel along the way.

We arrived at Sherwin's house after walking for nearly 20 minutes. Then, we went to where his boat was docked.

Lodging
Gloria Macalalad

We boarded the small boat and started our island tour.

First stop was Verde Island Resort. Unfortunately, it was already closed.

I roamed around the resort and took pictures.

Then, from Kanluran we went to San Antonio, then to Sawang Dive, San Agapito, Batalang Bato, Punta Verde in San Agapito, Barangay Matalisay and then to Barangay Liponpon.

                      Sawang Dive

                      Punta Verde

The island tour is not suited for the weak hearts. The sea waves and current are really strong! Imagine, it was summer. What more during rainy season or during Xmas season when the Amihan is really strong!

Our last destination was Kuweba. There I met Jojo Cueto whom I met due to the help of Kristine Cueto and his sibling, Nelson Harold Cueto. They were very helpful and accommodating!

This is the reason why it was called Kuweba (cave)!

           Yup! There is a lighthouse!

And the scenery was the best part of it!

Thank you Sherwin (wearing cap) and Jojo for my Isla Verde Tour!

Past 3 pm, we went back to Aplaya Tabangao. It took 1 hour and 20 minutes thru the small boat.

Sherwin Acebeda (0999) 688 0563 / (0975) 737 4243
Island tour - P1,500
Rent of boat going back to Tabangao - P1,500

But I asked for a discount and got it for P2,500. And it was worth it!!!

                Thank you Isla Verde!
