My Top 10 Habal-Habal (single motorcycle) Adventures in the Philippines

It is inevitable in exploring Philippines
that one must ride either the habal-habal, skylab or pabahay!

All these means of transportation involve riding a single motorcycle (usually a Honda TMX motorcycle for its strength, endurance, and power to carry numerous passengers).  In Mindanao, the habal- habal and skylab are common sight and mode of transportation. It is a-must to experience the ride as an adventurer/explorer!

In my nearly ten years of travel around the Philippines, here are my ten most unforgettable and best rides using the habal-habal!

1. Monkayo, Compostela Valley

The skylab ride towards the Awao Falls is the best ride ever in my entire life! Imagine, 11 passengers on board the skylab and cruising around 50-60 kilometers in a rugged, muddy, uphill, downhill, and zigzaging road! We even had to cross a river which was then three feet high!

In case you are not convince, what about using the single motorcycle to carry logs!

2. Baganga, Davao Oriental

Number two is my ride to Campawasan Curtain Falls and Cateel, Davao Oriental. Imagine, going to Campawasan Curtain Falls from the town of Baganga (30 plus kilometers back and forth) under the siege of Typhoon Seniang and crossing the river four times.

But that is not the end of the story, after going to the falls, I hired him again as my ride to Cateel Davao Oriental (45 kilometers from Baganga) and then reaching Cateel, going to Aliwagwag Falls (24 kilometers) and then going back to the town of Cateel (24 kilometers again) for my overnight accommodation. I was wet, tired, and cold after the adventure!!!

3. Maragusan, Compostela Valley

Third in the list is the 5-hour adventure in the banana plantation of Maragusan, Compostela Valley. Nothing beats the  the terrain, slippery and rocky roads and the sight of the plantation. Getting lost in the plantation was part of the adventure! According to my driver Rahim, he was awarded as one of the best drivers in town. I learned it the hard way! =)

4. Calbiga, Samar

There were three of us on board the habal-habal and we were descending from the mountain at the speed of 40-50 kilometers. The road was muddy and rugged. And topping the scene was the Signal No. 2 in Samar!

5. Sabtang, Batanes

The Sabtang ride is memorable in the sense that we had to board the motorcycle to the boat going to Sabtang Island and then journeying the entire island (all the barangays!) using the motorcycle and it took us nearly 5 hours to do the feat.

6. Camiguin

It took me two days of habal-habal ride before I was able to finish going to all the major tourist spots in Camiguin.

7. Bislig, Surigao Del Sur

How about getting lost? The driver did not know the way towards Tinuy-an Falls! Normal travel time is only 20 minutes but it took us 1 hour and 45 minutes before reaching the falls.

8. Kanlaon, Negros Oriental

Searching and seeing three falls, getting bewildered by the biggest tree, and climbing the mountain using the habal-habal was really an adventure!

9. Lake Sebu, South Cotabato

Using the extended habal-habal, we went to the 7 falls, 3 lakes and mingled with the tribe!

10. Samal Island, Davao

This one is the most expensive. Imagine, P300/hour! And we had to go to the major tourism spots in Samal Island. We finished the tour in four hours of fast-paced tour!

Worthy of mention is my long ride in Biri Island, Northern Samar!

Top 5 Rapids in the Philippines for Tourists

rapid is a section of a river where the river bed has a relatively steep gradient causing an increase in water velocity and turbulence. Rapids are categorized in classes, generally running from I to VI. A Class 5 rapid may be categorized as Class 5.1-5.9. While class I rapids are easy to negotiate and require no maneuvering, class VI rapids pose threat to life with little or no chance for rescue. (from Wikepedia).

Rapids create what we call as whitewater. And this formation is best-suited for river rafting!

Here in the Philippines, here are the top 5 rapids that I have seen.

1. Davao River

White River Rafting in Davao!

So what is white river rafting?

Well, I am lost for words to describe it.

The first time I experienced river rafting was in the Governor's Rapids in Quirino.

Cagayan De Oro

But the thrill of the  experience came in Cagayan De Oro! The rafting is four (4) hours and consists of 21-22 rapids. It was fun!

Then, came Davao!

While I was doing the rafting in Cagayan De Oro, one of the paddlers told me that there is another similar adventure in Davao and the thought came to me. "I will also try Davao!"

I love adventures and dangers. I am a lone backpacker. And I have decided. I will try Davao!

Upon arriving in Davao, I went to Samal Island for a day then went to the city proper where I booked for the river rafting.

The following morning, I woke up 6am and fixed myself and immediately flagged down and boarded a taxi. The meeting place was in Davao Corocodile Park. The ride from my inn to the park was thirty minutes.

I arrived at the park and waited for it to open. I met my contact person named Adam.

Briefing was made. And we went to the site. The ride again from the park to the rafting site is one (1) hour. Along the way, we introduced ourselves to each other. My co-paddlers are Zach, Shawn, Izza, Nash, Ray, and I. And our river guide is the hilarious and unpredictable guy named Mac! There are two (2) groups of paddlers.

Another briefing was made when we arrived at the site.

Then after the twenty minute briefing, we were off!!

The rafting consists of 25 rapids for three (3) hours over 13 kilometers of the river.

We were eager to paddle! Mac was shouting at the top of his voice - "easy paddle!"

In just a matter of ten minutes and while waiting for the other boat, we were pulled by the current towards a wall. In Cagayan, we hit so many walls and so this is another wall. I WAS WRONG!

We tried to evade the wall. But our maneuvering was futile. We hit hard!

And so it happened! CAPSIZED!

I was drowning for 6-7 seconds, I was struggling to go to the surface, everything was moving fast. My right foot hit a big rock and then my knee hit another. My sight was becoming blurred...I was losing hope! Then, somebody yelled - "Lean forward!! It was Nash. I came to my senses. I leaned forward. I tried my best to hold on to Nash. But I coudn't. Then, I saw the raft and fought my way through the rapids. I gripped on the paddle and somebody pulled me aboard.. OMG!

The adrenalin rush was still pumping when I was pulled in. I lost my paddle. Mac tried to find it and he did.`

The tour is three hours and we've just started.

With Mac

I told Mac that I hate him for what he did and he was laughing out loud.

Anyway, on with the tour...

It is totally different in Cagayan. In Cagayan there are portions of calm waters and rapids. So there are times you can swim and enjoy mother nature.

In Davao, the rapids are near to each other and there is no way you can swim.

In other words, it is extremely dangerous in Davao!

After 45 minutes, we stopped and partake our packed lunch. It took twenty minutes for all of us to finish our lunch.

Then, the journey went on for another hour and a half.. It was three hours. But it lasted forever in my memory. CHERISHED!
