Bantayan Island in Cebu

If there is one beach spot renowned worldwide in Cebu, it would  be Bantayan Island.

Anika Beach Resort, Santa Fe, Bantayan Island

Summer 2013. I was then on Day 5 of my tour and I just finished touring at Malapascua Island. My last beach spot after visiting, Oslob, Moalboal, Olango Island, Malapascua Island and Camotes Island was Bantayan Beach. I saved the best for last!

How to get there

From Cebu City, you have to go to the North Bus Terminal.

Once there, you have to board a bus going to Hagnaya.

You can choose from either Ceres or Rough Rider.

I've always chosen Ceres as my bus whenever I travel in Visayas or Mindanao.
From either Camotes Island or Malapascua, you can also go to Bantayan Island (I made a separate blog for this)

From Cebu City, travel time is 3 hours. Fare is P150.00 for aircon buses.

But I came from Malapascua Island, so I went back to Don Pedro (intersection of going to either Maya or Hagnaya). I hired a tricycle for P100.00 and went to Hagnaya Port.

There are only 2 shipping companies operating at Hagnaya Port.

Schedule of trips
Super Shuttle Ferry

Hagnaya to Santa Fe

4:00 am, 7:00 am; 8:00 am; 10:30 am; 12:30 pm; 2:30 pm; 4:30 pm

Santa Fe to Hagnaya
6:00 am; 8:30 am; 10:30 am; 12:30 pm; 2:30 pm; 4:30 pm; 6:00 pm

Contact Nos.
Santa Fe- 0909-258-2875; 0916
                                                                          Hagnaya - 0916-905-2348

For Island Shipping Corporation (the interval of 30 minutes as against Super Shuttle Ferry)

Fare is P170 for ordinary and P185.00 for aircon room. The ro-ro trip is 1 hour only.

After an hour, I reached the Port of Santa Fe in Bantayan Island.

I had no plans of staying in Bantayan due to my tight schedule last summer.

I have to finish this tour in 2-3 hours only.

There are so many resorts in Santa Fe and Bantayan. But I chose Santa Fe only due to lack of time to visit the next town (Bantayan).

I've visited only 6 resorts/accommodations while in Bantayan Island and I'm going to rank them according to the best resort.

1. Anika Island Resort

Newest and nearest to the port

Room rates
Lowest - P1,750.00
Highest - P3,000.00

Contact nos. - 0921-760-3857; 438-9093

6. And the last one, Coco Beach

situated in the town proper

It's a bit far from the beach

If there is another thing I love about Bantayan, it's the food! Imagine this squid (which measures 12 inches) was worth P150.00 only. I wanted it grilled but the owner of the restaurant told me that it will take them half an hour to grill it, but only 10 minutes to cook it in Adobo. So I chose the Adobo.

It's Really More Fun in Bantayan Island!!!

Ceres Aircon - P200

Side trip - WHALE WATCHING IN OSLOB

How to get there

From Cebu City
Option 1 (best option)
Board a flight to Cebu. Then, go to South Bus Terminal. Board a bus (preferably, Ceres) to Oslob. Fare is P155. Travel time is 3 - 3.5 hours or 124 kilometers. Alight at MB Sunrise View Resort. Hire a habal-habal for P140 to Tumalog Falls. Travel time is 10-15 minutes. Trek to the falls is 10 minutes only.

Option 2
Board a flight to Cebu. Then, go to South Bus Terminal. Board a bus (preferably, Ceres) with the signboard Bato via Barili. Fare is P191 (aircon) or P177 (non-aircon). Travel time is 4 - 4.5 hours or 147 kilometers. Alight at Bato Terminal and board another bus going to Oslob.  Fare in the bus is P30 (aircon) or P20 (non-aircon). Travel time is 15 minutes or 16 kilometers. Alight at MB Sunrise View Resort. Hire a habal-habal for P140 to Tumalog Falls. Travel time is 10-15 minutes or 6 kilometers. Trek to the falls is 10 minutes only.

From Dumaguete City

The other one is from Dumaguete City. From the city, ride a multicab bound to Sibulan port (fee is P11.00 only). Then, ride a fastcraft to Santander. The boat trip to Santander is 20 minutes only. Fare is P60.00. Reaching Santander port, ride a bus going to Cebu (the bus is just waiting at the port). The trip to Oslob is 20-25 minutes only. Fare is 60.00 aircon. Then alight at Barangay Tan-awan, Oslob, Cebu.

PLACE TO STAY
There are so many resorts/accommodations in Tan-awan. But I stayed at MB's Sunrise View Resort (one that has the yellow gate). Lodging fee is P800 for non-aircon (negotiable up to P500) and P1,500 for aircon (good for 3 pax). The other resorts are charging P1,500 - P2,000 for aircon.

  5. Hi sir! Useful tong blog mo. I wanna go to either Bantayan or Sumilon Island. =))))

  6. Hi. Which is the better place to go? Bantayan Island or Oslob? I only have 2 nights to stay in Cebu that's why I want to make it worth my limited time. :) Thanks for any input.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Both of them are hours away from the city. But Bantayan requires a boat ride.

If you want to enjoy the beach - Bantayan is the choice!
If you want adventure and swim with the whale sharks - Oslob.
Oslob's beach is not that good

  9. Hi! I'm planning to do a 4-day solo trip to Cebu soon. What other site/beach would you recommend I visit in addition to Bantayan? I don't want the trip to be so toxic, so I'll probably stick w/ visiting just 2 places. Thanks. :)

  10. Bantayan is the best beach in Cebu.
But my personal favorite is Malapascua - http://junvillegas.blogspot.com/2013/03/malapascua-island-best-island-in-cebu.html
There are other beaches like Camotes and Moalboal -

Camotes and Moalboal are near the city. Camotes is near Bantayan.

    2. Hi Jun, We'll be staying in Cebu for a 4days, 3 nights stay. Our first night will be at bantayan. We are 7 in the group. What is advisable for the transfer if where from Mactan Airport going to Bantayan? Is it renting a car or having a cab, a bus then a ferry? And One more thing if we're from the city, how far is Oslob and what mode of transportation can we take and can you include the price?? Thanks so much Jun. Here's my email chloie.titco@rocketmail.com

    3. Quite busy nowadays, sorry. My suggestion is to get a cab to the bus station, then bus ride to the port going to Bantayan and then ferry ride to the island. Going to Oslob, you have to go back to Cebu City (bus ride again) and another bus ride to Oslob. Bantayan and Oslob are on the opposite ends of Cebu. It would take the whole day for the trip. I will try to get the price. Enjoy!

  13. I made a very lengthy and extensive reply. Unfortunately, there was a problem in Google. Anyway, you can enjoy both. Go first to Oslob, then afterwards enjoy Bantayan.

I made an itinerary, it was not published because of the DNS error.

  17. Thank you so much for your incredibly helpful blog! I am a solo female traveler headed to Cebu the end of August. Thanks to you, I now want to visit both Bantayan and Malapasqua. I will have 11 days. My question is which island would you recommend I visit first, if you consider that I will be arriving to Cebu at 1:20 am, and will feel a little vulnerable with so much cash on me for Malapasqua (no ATMs, right). Does Bantayan have ATM machines? Anyway, I will seriously consider your advice. Thank you so much!

    1. There are so many island destinations in Cebu. To cite a few, Bantayan, Malapascua and Camotes. Go first to Bantayan because it is the farthest destination from Cebu City. And then, Malapascua and if you still have time, try to drop by in Camotes. No ATMs in Malapascua. In Bantayan, I'm not sure. You have to bring plenty of cash. Usually, I place my cash separately, for example in my pocket, in my bag and in my socks.

Please take note of the boat schedules in the islands. They have different schedules. Enjoy Cebu!

    1. Malapascua is more serene and has lesser crowd. The sunset experience was really amazing! If you have time, patience and energy, go to both. But tourists usually prefer Bantayan. Enjoy your trip!

    1. The two places are far from each other. You have to choose only one due to your limited time, unless you just want to see both beaches. You have to stay for at least a day to enjoy the beach. The schedule of the boat from both point vary. The city tour can be finished half-day or 4-5 hours. You just need to rent a taxi. I am abroad now having my tour as well and I will try to get back to your request later. Enjoy your trip.

So glad to see that you are actively responding to each queries that your readers are posting. :) I would also like to ask for your suggestion, my friends and I are going to Cebu on June 2015 for just 3D/2N and we are planning to go to Oslob. I'm just wondering.. Will it be possible for us to go to Bantayan Island too? Given that we will arrive in Cebu at 1pm (first day) then will leave at 11:45pm on our last day. I will greatly appreciate your reply, thank you, sir! God bless! :)

    1. Yes, it's possible. Sorry for the late reply, Been busy teaching in college. Day 1, go immediately to Oslob from the city. But this will entail a lot of effort and patience on your part. Spend the night in Oslob, book your whale wathcing upon arrival. Whale watching starts very early. DAY 2 - After whale watching, 8-9 am, catch the bus going back to Cebu City, then ride the bus going to Bantayan and catch the boat going to Bantayan. You have to know the last trip going to Bantayan. I am not sure of the latest sked.Spend the night in Bantayan. DAY 3 - check out in the hotel is 12 pm and I suggest you maximize that time and roam around the island. You can hire a motorcycle tour of the island or simply relax in the resort. Past 1 pm, go back to the city. And I suggest you go to Crown Hotel and experience their adventures. Again, you said your flight is 11:45 pm. So you still have plenty of time to enjoy the city. Enjoy and Good luck My other suggestion is just go to Moalboal coz it is a lot closer to the city.

    1. Honestly, the best time to travel to any beach in the Philippines is from March - June when the weather is still hot. The reason why I do not advise to travel in August is because of the LPA and sudden change of weather. It is a risk that you have to take.

Suggested Itinerary (depends on your adventure)
Can you pls email me your ETA in Cebu and the flight back to Manila so that I can make a good itinerary. My email: junv37@gmail.com

For the meantime pending receipt of your flight details, I suggest you go to Oslob and do whale watching, have a city tour in Cebu and enjoy the best beach i Cebu which is Bantayan Island. Three spots in 4 days possible?? YES.

  42. Hi! Thanks for this blog. Very informative and reliable. I have questions though..Is the travel to Bantayan island safe for kids (particularly the ferry ride)? Is Anika resort (also Alice beach as a whole) a child-friendly place? Im planning to bring my 8-year old daughter with us. But the lengthy travel, covering the air, land, and the sea travel makes me think twice. Me and hubby survived that gruelling 5-hour jampacked with so little leg room-van ride to el nido from pps so this one is going to be fine with us.Another thing , is the month of June there in that island mostly high tide? Im not a fan of super low tide beaches so i always do a check before going to an island/beach. And is there a jellyfish season in the island ? I got a little disappointed with El nido because at the time of our visit, the places we went to were teeming with jellyfish. And lastly , incase we decide to bring our child, would you advise us not to let her experience island hopping with us. She experienced island hopping in Zambales before , my concern was the boat. It was small and the waves in Zambales are big and a little scary. Dont know if the sea gets rough out there in Bantayan. But she would surely love to do some snorkelling and hopefully island hopping too..

  43. Hi Sir, can you help me with our itinerary? My family and I will travel to Cebu this coming sem break Oct 24-27. I'm with my kids and nieces, oldest 16 yrs old and the youngest my son 3yrs old. Our target place is Bantayan Island. Our flight arrival in Cebu is 8pm. Is there a van that we can hire from the airport going to Hagnaya Port directly? Our flight back to Manila is 5am on the 27th. I saw on your blog that Camotes Island is also nice, is it possible that we can visit it also from Bantayan or just do the Cebu city tour instead. Any suggestion will ba a great help. My email address is au8192004@yahoo.com. Thanks & God bless

    1. Van - Taxi probably. I'm not sure po. From Bantayan Island, you will pass Camotes. But the boat ride is slated only once a day early morning. You can spend one day (overnight). Then leave the following morning.
